Mission: The Marine Mammal Observer Association (MMOA) exists to protect marine mammals by promoting the highest standards of environmental mitigation and professional practice. We provide a platform for professional development, advocacy, and collaboration across science, policy, and industry, supporting mitigation professionals to lead with expertise, integrity, and impact.
Vision: To be the global standard-bearer in marine mammal protection and the leading resource for professional development, community, and support for mitigation professionals worldwide.
The MMOA aims to works with professional, experienced and newly-qualified mitigation professionals, industry, government agencies, non-government organisations (NGOs), statutory bodies and academics to improve the profession's effectiveness by our six priorities:

Develop and share evidence-based standards for marine mammal mitigation and monitoring across global offshore industries. -
Support Professional Development
Provide access to training resources, technical updates, and mentorship to strengthen skills and career pathways. -
Advocate for Effective Environmental Protections
Engage with regulators, researchers, and industry to influence policy and ensure marine mammal conservation and welfare remains a priority. -
Encourage a Connected Global Community
Build a collaborative network of mitigation professionals to share knowledge, experiences, and opportunities. -
Enhance Representation and Voice
Act as a collective voice for practitioners in decision-making forums to improve conditions, safety, and recognition in the field. -
Champion Inclusion and Accessibility
Support equity, diversity, and access to professional opportunities across regions and backgrounds.
The MMOA seek to achieve this through:
- Representing the MMOA at key conferences and industry meetings to promote professional mitigation standards.
- Providing career development resources and guidance to support the advancement of mitigation professionals.
- Maintaining an active online Community to encourage feedback and knowledge-sharing among experienced mitigation professionals.
- Acting as a contact point for expert advice, consultation on mitigation issues, and input into the development and review of industry guidelines.
- Enhancing member knowledge and access to resources through a maintained and regularly updated Information Directory.
- Promoting and supporting the consistent collection, collation, and analysis of visual and acoustic data at a global scale.
The MMOA has been formally set up as an Association with a formal Constitution and Executive Committee which has been voted in by the membership. Accounts are formalised through an official Bank Account designed for non-profit organisations with the Cooperative Bank, UK.
